Italian Course - Syllabus
Duration: 6 weeks
Total Course Hours: 12 hours
Requirements: Knowledge of the English Language (from basic to low-intermediate level - A2-B1)
The aim of this course is to provide students with an A1 knowledge of Italian language, enabling them to converse daily and learn about Italian culture.
We believe that the first step in understanding a language is to understand its culture, and that’s why each lesson has a cultural theme!
We aim for fast and interactive learning through many hands-on exercises, visual content such as images and videos to help the students listen and memorize the content, and role-play between students and teachers.
COURSE SYLLABUS
WEEK 1: ITALIAN PRONUNCIATION
Cultural Topic = Italian Cuisine (Part I)
Part 1: Culture and Language
Memorize Italian pronunciation while exploring one of the richest aspects of Italian culture: cooking!
Learn the alphabet through Italian cuisine words. You will learn the Italian alphabet (vowels and consonants) and its particular sounds (double letters, c, ch, g, gh).
Part 2: Conversation and Culture
Vocabulary and Conversation: Ciao!
Learn how to introduce yourself with simple greetings and questions (hello, good morning, good evening, good night, How are you?, What’s your name?, thank you, you’re welcome, I’m sorry), and the verb “To be”.
WEEK 2: NUMBERS AND ARTICLES
Cultural Topic = Italian Cuisine (Part II)
Part 1: Culture and Language
Learn numbers and the indefinite and definite articles in all their characteristics: masculine/feminine, singular/plural.
Practice them with the words learnt from Week 1.
Part 2: Conversation and Culture
Exercise: How to ask what someone’s age is (How old are you?), and how to answer learning the verb “To have”.
We will introduce another cultural fun fact: the unlucky numbers in Italian culture!
WEEK 3: EXPRESSING MOVEMENT, PREPOSITIONS, AND VERBS
Cultural Topic = Places in Italy
Part 1: Culture and Language
Learn about prepositions, some complements and motion verbs, and the relations between them.
You will also learn the vocabulary of daily places (home, school, supermarket) and Italian cities.
Part 2: Conversation and Vocabulary
Practicing the use of prepositions, learning more vocabulary of common places (park, station, office, restaurant, bank, library, book shop, university, etc.).
Exercise: How to ask what someone’s nationality is (Where are you from?).
Learn to express daily actions (going to the office, going home, going to the park with a friend), and learn verbs and directions.
WEEK 4: PRONOUNS AND FAMILY VOCABULARY
Cultural Topic = “The Family” in Italy
Part 1: Culture and Language
Learn how to use possessive and qualifying adjectives and pronouns using family members' names and pets.
In addition to family members' names, you will also learn terms of endearment, such as nicknames, and colors.
Part 2: Conversation and Culture
Practice new vocabulary by talking about the student’s family and/or their pets, describing them using the pronouns and adjectives learned in Week 3.
Vocabulary: Family Members, Pets, Adjectives (good, bad, beautiful, ugly, smart, kind, etc.), Colors
WEEK 5: ASKING QUESTIONS
Cultural Topic = Italian Holidays
Part 1: Culture and Language
Learn how to ask questions together with interrogative pronouns and adjectives ( who, where, how, how much, etc.).
Exercise: How to ask what time it is (What time is it?). How to ask when someone’s birthday is (When is your birthday?)
Part 2: Conversation and Culture
Learn the days of the week and the months using a famous Italian rhyme poem!
Vocabulary: Holidays, Days of the Week, Months, Seasons.
Week 6: DAILY ACTIONS
Cultural Topic = Traditional uses and customs
Part 1: Culture and Language
Learn the most common verbs and adverbs that students can use on a daily basis with their present and negative forms.
Together with simple verbs, we will discuss traditional Italian habits and customs!
Part 2: Conversation and Culture
At this point, students will be able to formulate and construct simple sentences and communicate in Italian at an elementary level.
We will practice with role play scenarios and dialogues, expressing simple sentences and using vocabulary learned throughout the whole course.
Vocabulary: Verbs (to eat, to sleep, to drink, to like, to do, to say, etc.)
